Program Description
*******************
If you are like most of us, your mom helped you open your first
checking account at the bank. You were given a few "starter checks"
and a blank register book. You learned quickly that it is very
important to maintain your own personal register of transactions:
* To stay aware of your balance from day-to-day, and
* To make sure your records matched the bank's records when
the monthly statement came in.
Yet when you open a credit card account, the credit card company
doesn't give you a blank register book. Looking at the reasons listed
above for maintaining a checking register, don't the same important
reasons apply for a credit card account? Maybe even more so?
Credit card companies don't issue a blank register book because they
really don't want you to be constantly aware of your day-to-day
balance. Credit card companies make most of their profit in the
interest you incur on your unpaid principal-- the higher your unpaid
balance, the more money they make. If you maintained a credit card
register, that credit card company would almost certainly make less
profit from you in the long run, so no register is offered.
Because maintaining a financial register of any kind is a pain for
most of us, it's rather easy to talk yourself into not maintaining a
register for your credit cards. Actually, it's a subject you probably
haven't really dwelled on before, and the credit card companies
certainly won't bring it up. Think about it: What do you usually end
up doing with your credit card receipts? Do you keep them and later
enter them on a personal register to keep track of your balance, and
to compare it to the credit statement when it arrives in the mail?
CredCard gives you a convenient, powerful, and very friendly
opportunity to maintain registers of all your credit card accounts.
CredCard can maintain up to 1,000 different credit card accounts, and
up to 1,000 transactions per account!
If you've never considered it before because they was no convenient
way of doing it, then you owe it to yourself to try CredCard for a
couple of months. I'm convinced you'll find it a pleasure to use.

Shareware Advisory
******************
CredCard.Exe is a Shareware program. This means that you are allowed
to evaluate this program at no charge. You are even encouraged to
copy and distribute the review version (not a full-featured version)
of this program for others to evaluate. If you decide to use this
program regularly, you are expected to register the program with the
author.
Other RAD Software programs are also available on CompuServe (keyword
RAD3) and GEnie (keyword RAD4) Information Services. These include
programs for the home, hobbyist, collector, entertainment, education,
and law enforcement.

Installing the Program
**********************
I M P O R T A N T : Although CredCard can be run on a floppy disk
drive, it is much more preferable that you install the program on a
hard disk drive so the full capabilities of the program can be
utilized. On the floppy disk drive, you are severely limited as to
the number of accounts (and transactions per account) that can be
maintained before running out of disk space.
An installation program has been included that can install the
CredCard program files onto your hard disk drive automatically. Place
the original RAD Software floppy disk in your floppy disk drive.
Assuming that your floppy disk drive is Drive A, type the following
commands at the DOS prompt:
a: (Press the Enter key)
credinst (Press the Enter key)
Upon successful installation, your screen will display instructions on
running the program, and a convenient means is provided for you to
copy those instructions to your printer.
*******************************
Installing the Program Manually
*******************************
If, for whatever reason, you would rather install the CredCard program
files yourself instead of letting the installation program do it for
you, then carefully follow the below instructions:
Assuming that your hard disk drive is Drive C, type the following at
the DOS prompt:
c: (Press the Enter key)
md\credcard (Press the Enter key)
cd\credcard (Press the Enter key)
(cont. next page)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put the original RAD Software floppy disk into your floppy disk drive
and, assuming the floppy disk drive is Drive A and the hard disk drive
is Drive C, type the following at the DOS prompt:
copy a:\credcard.* c:\credcard (Press the Enter key)
If the floppy disk drive or hard disk drive letters are different from
those assumed above, then substitute the respective letters
appropriately.
Remove the original RAD Software floppy disk from the floppy disk
drive and put it away in a safe place.
********************
Starting the Program
********************
Assuming that your hard disk drive is Drive C, type the following to
start the program:
c: (Press the Enter key)
cd\credcard (Press the Enter key)
credcard [optional start-up password] (Press the Enter key)
As noted in the above line, there is a special start-up option
available. For more information, start the program, access CredCard's
"On-Line Help System", activate the Help Screen Index, and select the
section titled "Starting the Program" for complete details on this
option. (See the next page regarding CredCard's "On-Line Help
System".)

The On-Line Help System
***********************
CredCard has a very friendly and consistent interface that makes the
program easy to learn and use. As its various screens are displayed,
you will notice a certain consistency of format and methods of user
choices.
The most important "supporting function" available is the On-Line Help
System, which is always available during program execution at the
touch of the <F1> key.
The On-Line Help System includes several powerful features:
* It provides context-sensitive help at any time.
* You can then browse through the entire manual with the
cursor keys.
* If you press the <F1> key again while in the help screen, an
outlined "Help Index Screen" will pop up, providing you with
a "quick-select" point & shoot method of selecting and
instantly accessing any section of the program manual.
* You can print the program manual at the touch of the <F2>
key. The printout is 9 pages long.
If you are just getting familiar with CredCard's features and
abilities, I strongly encourage you to start CredCard, press the <F1>
key at the title screen, and read (or print) the manual to acquaint
yourself with the program. Press the <F1> key again while in the help
screen for "quick-select" access to any section of the manual.
Note that there are many important points covered in the "Program
Features" and "Starting the Program" sections of the manual that will
greatly enhance your efficiency and power when using CredCard.

Backing Up Your Data
********************
CredCard is capable of maintaining enormous amounts of important and
irreplaceable information. If you are not an experienced computer
user, then the importance of regularly backing up (copying for
safekeeping) your data onto "backup floppy disks" cannot be over-
emphasized. If you are an experienced computer user, then you are
aware of the importance of backing up your data files but, if you are
like many of us, you probably don't do it as often as you should.
Either way, this can't be overemphasized. Your DOS manual explains
how DOS's "Backup" and "Restore" commands can be used to back up your
hard disk data regularly and fairly conveniently. If your prefer,
there are many effective after-market utilities that also provide
convenient backup services for you at reasonable cost.
How often do you need to back up your hard disk? Ask yourself: Am I
willing to deal with the consequences of losing a (day/week/month)'s
worth of data that I put into the computer? Whatever length of time
you decide is intolerable, you should backup your data AT LEAST that
often.
*****************************
Tampering with the Data Files
*****************************
I M P O R T A N T : CredCard creates and manipulates many other
supporting files. These files include "CredCard.Dex", which is a non-
Ascii formatted random access file that contains a sorted list of
different credit card accounts that you are maintaining, and up to
1000 separate "*.Dat" files, each of which contains a complete
register of transaction information of one of your credit card
accounts, using a non-Ascii standard. The formatting of the data, and
the storage of the data itself, is performed by the program itself in
a special manner. If you erase or attempt to change these files
yourself, you will almost certainly cause corruption of your data in a
manner that cannot be recovered or fixed.
Note, however, that it will cause no problem if you simply make copies
of these files for safekeeping, so long as you don't erase, change, or
misplace these files.
